Web Developers = Geeks = Sci-Fi Fans
It is a very common formula in my world. Almost every person I’ve ever worked with that was into computers, development, etc., was a fan of Sci-Fi of some form (be they Trekkies or Star Wars fans or X-Files, etc.) and could at least provide some level of empathy when important things happen in the world of Science Fiction. I remember the camraderie amongst my peers at work a few years ago when Douglas Adams died. Each of us shared our favorite phrase/item/character from his series. Most sci-fi fans respect each others differences and get along pretty well.
However, what happens when a web developer (such as myself) discovers that the IT department he is now a part of (such as myself) is a sci-fi fan vacuum? The horror of this discovery came upon me this very day when I returned from my lunch hour to display my copy of the Star Wars DVD set. No one else cared! That is a very lonely feeling. After all, it’s almost bragging rights as to who gets their copy first or sees the latest movie first. Where is the joy when there is no one to accept the bragging for what it is: a bonding of souls in this lonely universe called geekdom?
Layer on to this emptiness that my project manager has not even seen one of the Star Wars movies all the way through. He has even gone so far to admit that he was merely a poser geek and not one of true worthiness of the title. Why, just the fact that I’m having to explain all this in a blog shows my geekness.
Hmph… guess I’ll have to find my other fellow geek friends to go see this movie… I obviously won’t be doing that with any of my current co-workers. I’ll probably have to choose something more eclectic for this group like “Titanic 2: It didn’t sink in an alternate universe”… no wait… that would be just the thing for geeks… especially if Leonardo DiCaprio ends up actually being shot in the film… I’d go see that.
Now, back to more serious stuff….
