Small World

How do you know if the field you are in is a minority discipline? Well, either you study up on it online and read statistics of employees in that field versus other fields, or you keep working until you have the following scenario happen:

A friend of mine, Manny, is disciplined in the development of Crystal Reports documents. When I was at Aloha on contract, the only Crystal Reports developer, Aimee, left the company. Manny was hired into that position (and that’s how I met him) to produce more Crystal Reports. Upon leaving Aloha (in Bedford, TX), he ended up in a contract position for another firm (in Addison, TX) taking over a position in Crystal Reports developing originally held by some guy named Brian.
This doesn’t sound all that unusual until he ends up at his latest contract position (which has the possibility of going permanent) (in Irving, TX). It’s likely that he was brought in to help until the woman on maternity leave, Aimee (yup, THE same Aimee mentioned before), comes back. Meanwhile, he’ll be working with Brian (yup, THE same Brian mentioned before) and may get hired on with them at the end of his contract.
So now he’ll be able to meet the two people he heard so much about in his last two jobs.

This is how you know that your are in a small unique discipline where fellow colleagues may bump into each other like that.

In a continuing string of weird coincidences… Manny and I had lunch together yesterday and he sees someone there that he worked with at a company before Manny started at Aloha. Neither of them are at the same company now, but they still manage to cross paths a year later having lunch in the same place. Bizarre.
