Drinking the Koolaid

Okay, so this has nothing to do with actually drinking any Koolaid (though that sounds really good right now and I’ll explain below). It has to do with actually participating in a group activity involving fitness. About half of the FatBloggers have participated in a 5K or Triathlon and I finally decided that I think I’m ready. My biggest difficulty in participating is finding an event not held on Saturday (I observe the Sabbath Friday-sunset through Saturday-sunset). Though there are a few coming up on Sundays, they are extremely early in the morning and about 30-40 miles away.

I did some searches online and found one that I could participate in. On September 11th, in the evening on that Thursday, there will be a 5K run held in downtown Dallas called the Freedom Run. I just finished registering for the event and feel kinda stoked about it. Below is a link to the map of this run:

I only decided to register after I completed a 5K run of my own this afternoon. I mapped out a run around my neighborhood that came out to 5K on Google maps, put on my gear, and did my run in 95o heat with very little breeze. I completed the run in 37:43. Though this is better than Johnny’s time, since this is in Dallas, the field of runners is much larger. My time would have been good enough last year to place 79th out of 86 in my age group; not exactly a 3rd place finish, but it would have been better than over half the almost 1000 runners.

As for the temperature, the run is downtown, so the concrete will increase the heat, but the run will also be 3 hours later. If I can get a decent time in really high temps, then I should do slightly better when the temperatures have cooled. I’m kinda excited and nervous now (oh… and thirsty… hence the dual Koolaid reference). I’ve never gone running with anyone and this will be a large group of people.

If you want to come on down and cheer me on, I would greatly appreciate it. I know Amy will be there.
