Battlestar Galactica and Islam
I’ve almost finished reading the book “America Alone” by Mark Steyn, a well-written commentary on current and future demographics of our ally nations, non-ally nations and ourselves. If anything, it has heightened my awareness of geopolitical issues and it now encourages me to pay more attention to world issues and learn to read between the lines, what is said and what is not said.
How does this relate to the subject of this post? Well, the main demographic statistics compared in the book are between islam and non-islam populations. As I continue my enjoyment of the SciFi Channel’s Battlestar Galactica, I start to see the similarities between the Cylons and Islam. How close can this be? Let’s count the ways:
- The initial goal of the Cylons was to completely annhilate the human race (defined as non-Cylons). Regardless of the rhetoric of media, anyone who is not an adherent of Islam is an infidel and the ultimate purpose of an infidel is to die in hellfire.
- The Cylons have no issue with destroying their own life to achieve their goal as stated in the previous item. The current terrorists and suicide-bombers are all destroying themselves to achieve the previously stated goal as well.
- There is virtually an endless supply of Cylons. Ditto.
- The Cylons believe in one true god while the humans have a pantheon of gods. Islam believes in one true god while they look on the rest of humanity as worshipping many other gods. (The sad part is that they’re not far from right when you see there are many different forms of “god” and the general consensus is that there is none.)
- The Cylons seek to take over Earth while the humans seek to make the planet their home. Islam seeks to take over Earth as well while humanity (for the most part) seeks to live on this planet in peace.
- There are new members of the Cylons who had lived among humans for years and only recently discovered they were Cylon. Many of the new converts to Islam are those who have lived among us for years.
- The Cylons have an issue with reproduction and depend on human interaction to increase their numbers. Many Islamic nations depend on non-muslims to handle basic functions in society.
Based on the general multicultural outlook in modern society, I think I can foresee the outcome of the series. After all, the socially acceptable idea is that Islam will just survive side-by-side with our culture and there all will be happy ever after. I truly believe that you will see a final result of the series protraying this same concept, that Cylons and humans will live side-by-side and all will be good. At least if this show’s ultimate purpose is to portray just that.
